Serguey Asael Shinder: Oracle's Java extension for VS Code 27.0.0 now needs JDK 21 to run
Oracle released version 27.0.0 of its Java Platform extension for Visual Studio Code on 5 October; Inside Java pointed to it on 8 October. The extension is the NetBeans-based Java language server for VS Code, separate from the Red Hat/Microsoft Java extension pack.
The change that can break a setup. 27.0.0 upgrades the embedded language server to NetBeans 31, and the extension now requires JDK 21 or newer to run. The release notes are explicit that this is about the JDK the extension runs on: the jdk.project.jdkhome setting still supports projects using JDK 8 and above. So a team building a Java 11 or Java 17 project is not forced to upgrade its code — but every developer machine needs a JDK 21+ installed and selected for the extension itself, via the jdk.jdkhome setting.

What else is in it:
- JDK 27 support in the tooling, and formatting options for newer language features, through NetBeans 31.
- Breakpoints inside individual lambdas while debugging (#571) — useful when a single line holds several lambdas, such as a stream pipeline, and a line breakpoint stops in all of them.
- A fix for notebook configuration when associating a project context (#617).
- The
jdk.advanced.disable.nbjavacsetting is visible again in the settings UI, and the built-in JDK downloader now points at JDK 27 GA.
What to do. Before the extension auto-updates across a team, check which JDK each developer's VS Code points jdk.jdkhome at. If it is 17 or older, the language server will not start after the update; install a JDK 21+ for the tooling and keep jdk.project.jdkhome on whatever your project builds with. CI is unaffected — this is an editor dependency, not a build one.
